Private car service from Salt Lake City International Airport to Cottonwood Heights starts at $160 for a sedan and $160 for an SUV.
Cottonwood Heights is about twelve miles southeast of the airport. The drive normally takes fifteen to twenty-five minutes. Rush hour and canyon traffic can extend that to twenty-five to forty-five minutes. The city sits at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon.
Roads we actually use
The standard route is I-80 east to I-215 south, then exit at 6200 South or 7200 South depending on your destination. For canyon access, drivers continue east on 6200 South toward Big Cottonwood Canyon Road or 9400 South toward Little Cottonwood Canyon Road. I-15 south to 7200 South is an alternative but usually slower.
Traffic by time of day
I-215 southbound can slow from 4:00 to 6:30 PM. Canyon traffic is the real variable. Powder mornings bring heavy eastbound volume to both canyons from 7:00 to 10:00 AM. Sunday afternoons see the reverse as skiers return to the airport. Summer weekends are lighter but still busy with hikers.
When to add buffer
Add fifteen minutes during evening rush. Add thirty to sixty minutes if you are continuing into Big Cottonwood or Little Cottonwood Canyon on a powder day. The Utah Department of Transportation sometimes implements traction law requirements during storms, which can slow access further.
Vehicle options and pricing
Sedans start at a written flat rate. SUVs start at $150. If you are heading up to ski resorts like Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, or Solitude, an SUV is strongly recommended in winter. The extra cargo space also helps with ski and snowboard bags.
